At The 8th Hour Chapter 5

Days Since Incident: 1,095

Time: 15:18

Place: 40.3360N, 74.2911W

Climate: 70F

The roar of the school bus engine immediately filled the area, gaining the attention of the nearby Chasers. The large school bus was painted black, with barred windows. It came crashing into a large number of Chasers, crushing most of them flat. Three Outriders in bikes came following afterwards, stopping short of the Hybrid Chaser and Captain Grae.

One of the Outriders drew out his gun, and began shooting at the Hybrid Chaser. Most of the bullets ricocheted off its body; only one landed in its eye. It screamed in pain, and threw Captain Grae like a rag doll across the field. She landed by a tree, with a few Chasers surrounding her. The other two Outriders drew out their weapons, ready to defend Captain Grae.

"Tori! Mykael! Get rid of the other Chasers! I'm going after Captain Grae!" The other Outrider ordered.

"Aye Captain!" Tori and Mykael said in unison. They carefully charged the group of Chasers surrounding Captain Grae. Though they were already experienced Outriders, having done multiple runs, they took each kill painfully slow.

The Hybrid Chasers remained distracted with its injury to its eye, wailing out in agony. Its high pitched squealing was sure to gain the attention of others soon enough if it wasn't dealt with.

The Captain reached Grae, and began to check for a pulse. He placed his fingers gently underneath her helmet, resting it at the base of her neck. There was a pulse, but it was very faint.

He began to gently shake her, calling out for her to wake up, yet there was no response. His shaking and yelling began to get more erratic and desperate.

"Come on Grae! Please get the fuck up!" He begged. Tori and Mykael were making slow progress on the few straggling Chasers. As they turned to face their Captain, they were greeted with a deadly white aura. The Hybrid Chaser was within inches of them; its razor sharp seemed to fall out from its mouth. It was angry...and hungry.

The school bus came swerving to a stop in front of the civilians, Mike, and Ron. Within seconds, the door swung open, revealing an outstretched hand.

"Come one, get in quick!"the Outrider said. The civilians did not hesitate, and ran inside all at once. It was empty, save for the four Outriders, with their helmets on, and a few weapons. Once the civilians entered, they were greeted with stone silence, and were gestured to move towards the back of the bus.

They were hesitant, finally realizing they were dealing with a new set of problems and people. As a collective group, they quickly shuffled towards the back. Ron and Mike quickly entered after them, happy that they were saved from this nightmare.

"Thank you guys! If you guys didn't come, we would've bee-" Ron began, but was quickly silenced by a fist. He flew back, landing on some seats. He suddenly became aware that they were not out of the woods just yet.

"What the fuck happened Ron!?" A female Outrider asked, readying her fists again. It took the driver, and a muscular Outrider to pull her off of him. Mike stood by the door, knowing that if said or did anything, he would be next. Though he would rather deal with this, than with Captain Rayn's interrogation.

"That is enough!" a much older female Outrider said. The bus immediately became quiet. She stood around six feet tall, and from the way her uniform looked on her, she was the "muscle" out of the group.

She swiftly walked up to Ron, grabbed him by his collar, and easily lifted him off the ground. She spoke with a clear, calm voice.

"Now, I understand that this is your first time out on assignment. I understand that you may have seen things that may have frightened you." She then began to squeeze her hand, choking him. His face immediately turned red; the veins on his neck bulged out. Her voice became darker and more menacing.

"The next time I see you smiling after leaving one of your own, I will make sure to gut your insides and feed it to your family. Is that understood?" she asked, making sure to look at Mike. Mike nodded, and Ron could only gargle a response. She released him and turned her attention back to the group. Ron landed on his knees, trying desperately to breathe.

"Auto, I need you on standby. Once Rayn and the group gets back with Grae, we need to get out of here." she ordered. Auto, the driver, got back to his seat, shifting gears.

The group of Outriders turned their attention to the small group in the back. The civilians grew nervous; they began to question whether or not they made the right choice in leaving with them.

The older female walked towards the group, stopping a few feet away from them. "Have they been inspected?" she asked. Ron and Mike looked at each other, and after much hesitation, Mike said, "No."

The other Outriders shook their heads in disbelief. "Inspected?" The female civilian asked. But the Outriders ignored her question, and turned their heads towards the front. Something had caught their attention.
